I think that the Barbados Airport is the most modern airport in the Caribbean although others would disagree.
The Barbados airport has a brand new look to it and many new conveniences.
Grantley Adams International Airport was completed on time for World Cup Cricket in 2007, which for none cricket lovers was a very important event for all of the Caribbean Islands.
The Barbados Airport has a new arrivals building containing immigration - duty free shopping - baggage hall - customs - and a location for tour operators, and offices for all government departments right at the airport.
A translucent membrane roof unifies the appearance of the building, and provides pleasant, diffused daytime lighting as well as a dramatic nighttime appearance.
A new airside departure lounge with views to the airside and a waveform roof over the seating areas, a series of choices for departing passengers including: retail shopping and cafe dining, extensive duty free retail, food court, and quiet lounge seating are available.
A continuous canopy and a closure at the roof facade on the existing building will harmonize with the front of the new arrivals building.
This is quite a change from the airport that I first arrived at in the early 1970's.
