Gun Hill Signal Station - The Lion - Barbados

Gun Hill Signal Station

With a 360 degree view and being 700 ft above sea level, Gun Hill was what made this location strategically important as a signal station to the 18th-century British army.

The garrison captain Henry Wilkinson, spent his off duty hours  carving a huge lion measuring 10 feet tall and 16 feet long from a single rock.

It is on the hillside just below the tower.

Using lanterns and semaphore, soldiers based here could communicate with their counterparts at The Garrison, on the south coast, and at Grenade Hill in the north.
